Context
The question follows discussions about labour shortages in the fishing industry, with concerns raised by Moray Chamber of Commerce regarding business closures due to staffing issues. The Prime Minister previously acknowledged the need to tackle such problems.
May I begin by acknowledging the passing of Mr Alex Sim from Peterhead, whose funeral is taking place at the moment? On Wednesday 5 March, the Prime Minister stated that they want to tackle labour shortages in the fishing industry. However, it is not just a question of fishing; Moray Chamber of Commerce informed me about hospitality sector business closures linked to recruitment issues. Can you tell me what progress has been made on this issue since our discussions with the Scottish Government? When will we be informed about specific measures for these industries?
We work closely with the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs on this issue. However, we must also focus on addressing the underlying causes of recruitment problems. The hon. Gentleman will welcome news that through our new labour market evidence group, we are engaging with devolved Governments to gather and share data and evidence on workforce status, training levels, and participation across all parts of the domestic labour market. This ensures an immigration system informed by comprehensive data.
