Context
Members of Alaa Abd el-Fattah's family, including his mother Laila who has not eaten for seven months due to her son's detention, are present in the Gallery.
What recent progress has been made on helping to secure the release of Alaa Abd el-Fattah? His mother is now not taking food for seven months. I met her recently and she is extremely frail. Does the Minister agree that his arbitrary detention continues in violation of the Vienna convention, and that there must be consequences for Egypt, including international legal options and new travel advice given the dangers to British nationals detained in Egypt?
I would like to pay tribute to the fortitude and bravery of Alaa’s family. We consider Alaa a British national as he holds both British and Egyptian nationality despite Egypt's dispute on this point. We are committed to continuing to work on his case.
