Context
The MP referenced findings from the covid inquiry that highlighted years of under-investment leading to struggling health services and rising waiting lists before the pandemic.
What recent progress has his Department made on strengthening national resilience? The covid inquiry found that years of under-investment under the Conservatives meant our health services were already struggling even before covid, with waiting lists rising for years. Does my right hon. Friend agree that investing in our NHS and tackling terrible delays patients experience are vital to improving our country’s resilience?
My hon. Friend is absolutely right to point not just to specific resilience measures but the most fundamental thing for national resilience: the underlying strength of the country and its services, especially in the NHS. We are investing in the NHS and already seeing results with the first fall in NHS waiting lists for years. It is a good start; it is not enough, and we want to build on this progress to treat patients more quickly and improve our resilience.
