Context
Constituents in West Dorset have expressed deep anxiety about the use of remote PIP assessments, with one constituent experiencing severe panic attacks and high blood pressure due to repeated phone assessments.
Many constituents in West Dorset have written to me with deep anxiety about the assessment for personal independence payments (PIP), especially the use of remote assessments. One constituent has endured months of repeated phone assessments despite previously being awarded enhanced PIP, triggering severe panic attacks and high blood pressure, causing lasting psychological harm. The Secretary of State has given a commitment to moving away from phone-based assessments, so what additional resources will be made available to support the roll-out of more face-to-face assessments in West Dorset?
There was a switch to remote assessments during the pandemic, but my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State has committed repeatedly to moving sharply back to face-to-face assessments while keeping alternatives for those who need them. We are speaking with assessment providers and have already increased the proportion of face-to-face assessments, which will continue.
