Context
The fruit and vegetables aid scheme, an EU legacy scheme, is set to close in England on January 1, 2026. Only 20% of growers are benefiting from it due to its requirement for producer organisations.
In my constituency, I have Busby, the biggest strawberry and raspberry farm in Leicestershire, which uses the fruit and vegetables aid scheme. The scheme is set to end at the end of 2025. Despite government promises since May to simplify and rationalise agriculture grants, Busby still does not know what its future funding will look like six months before closure. What will replace the scheme so that Busby can continue growing high-quality strawberries and raspberries?
While it has been known that this EU-based scheme would come to an end, I acknowledge its importance for fruit-growing sectors. However, the scheme did not provide good value for money. We are working on a new food strategy which will include replacements and announcements about these changes are coming down the line. But I am surprised by the hon. Gentleman's eagerness to preserve an EU-based scheme, suggesting he may still be hankering for EU membership.
