Context
Since Elon Musk purchased X in 2020, Departments have continued to spend money on subscriptions and ads on the site. One Department has recorded a spend of more than £400,000 since 2022.
The Government continues to spend significant amounts on social media advertising through X despite growing concerns about content moderation issues such as increased conspiracy theories, misogyny and racism on the platform. Given that the previous government suspended paid advertising in 2023 while reviewing alignment with their SAFE framework, does the Minister think it right to review Government spending on X?
My hon. Friend knows I take an interest in these matters. In 2023, the previous government suspended paid advertising on X while reviewing alignment with our SAFE framework. That suspension remains in place and we continue to post content, without paid promotion, to communicate important Government information.
