At a Glance

This petition concerning bromsgrove district housing targets was presented to Parliament 2 times by 1 MP.

Issue Summary

The petition of Bromsgrove District residents expresses concern over the 82% increase in housing targets for rural Bromsgrove while neighbouring urban Birmingham’s targets are reduced by 31%. They argue this imbalance is unjust and risks environmental degradation given Bromsgrove's high percentage of green belt land.

Action Requested

The petitioners request that the House of Commons urge the Government to justify the formula used to calculate housing needs for Bromsgrove District, reverse planned reductions in Birmingham’s housing targets to ensure a fair distribution of development burdens, and mandate infrastructure provision before allowing new house construction.

Key Facts

  • Housing targets for rural Bromsgrove increased by 82%.
  • Neighbouring urban Birmingham's targets decreased by 31%.
  • Bromsgrove District is 89% green belt land and 79% rural.
  • At least 140 hectares of brownfield land in south Birmingham are available for development.
  • Government implemented a new standard method for assessing housing needs in December 2024.

The Government’s housing targets are forcing a city template on to rural communities against the will of locals and with minimal consideration for infrastructure or environmental impact. That is why my “Save Our Greenbelt” petition has so far received 5,936 signatures. Bromsgrove and the villages, a 79% rural constituency composed of 89% green belt land, has been burdened by an 85% housing target increase, while our neighbouring city, Birmingham, has had its targets slashed by over 30%. The petition states: “The petitioners therefore request that the House of Commons urge the Government to justify the flawed formula used to calculate the local housing need for Bromsgrove District, reverse the planned reduction in Birmingham's housing target to ensure the burden is shared in a fair and proportionate way and only allow new houses to be built when the accompanying infrastructure is provided.”
