I served my country with pride in the Royal Green Jackets. I will always be a rifleman and a veteran. I welcome the veterans' strategy that the Prime Minister has just brought out, but I ask him whether veterans will always be at the heart of this Government's strategy and whether everything will be done to see that they always get what they need and are honoured?

Yes, that is why we have set up an Office for Veterans' Affairs and have ensured that veterans get preferential treatment on public transport, which was one of the first things I did when I became Prime Minister. It is why we ensure that veterans receive particular support and encouragement in employment, and we encourage employers to take on veterans as well.

I can tell him that the Black Country city deal has just seen an investment of £5.8 million and that the West Midlands Combined Authority was just awarded £66 million for projects across the area, including £15 million for the national brownfield institute, which is due to be located in Wolverhampton.

The hon. Member should know that 60% of all people who are given a short custodial sentence go on to reoffend within the year, so clearly the system that we have does not work. We cannot simply sit back and keep doing things that we know result in increased reoffending in communities that we all want to protect. We have to look at interventions that will make a difference. Tough community punishment produces better reductions in reoffending than short sentences. We will consult Members across the House as we prepare our Bill in the coming weeks to make sure that we have a strong package of unpaid work and other measures designed to toughen up community punishment.

What steps she is taking to support local jobcentres (a) during and (b) following the covid-19 outbreak, given that unemployment in Wolverhampton is above the country average and likely to be affected by the pandemic?

My hon. Friend is right to pay tribute to staff at his local jobcentre. Without the success of the furlough scheme introduced by my right hon. Friend the Chancellor, this could have been far worse. We are working hard across Government to help people in these challenging times to get back into work as soon as possible and to support an economic recovery that levels up all parts of the country, including Wolverhampton. I am sure he can refer people to the two new websites, job help and employer help, to signpost people to live vacancies and online support.

Main Concerns
['The MP is concerned about the poor condition of rural roads in South Shropshire, highlighting issues such as a significant increase in road defects reported to the Shropshire council, with more than 2,100 reports in January alone. He mentions that potholes are causing vehicle damage and near-misses for residents. The survey conducted by the MP showed that nearly 90% of respondents have had a near miss due to poor road conditions and 98% said the roads are in poor or very poor condition. Additionally, he notes that some areas are now impassable, affecting businesses and communities.']

Main Concerns
['Residents of rural areas such as South Shropshire deserve access to good postal services. The cost of a first-class stamp has almost doubled since 2020, and is now £1.70 a stamp. Since the election, I have campaigned successfully against the planned closures of post office services in South Shropshire, including Clunton and Clunbury. Additionally, concerns exist about the impact on communities due to bank closures and internet access issues.']

['I will continue to campaign against further closures and for more banking hubs in areas such as Church Stretton which has just lost its Yorkshire building society branch. I am also asking the Minister to address the Government consultation on post offices that could remove minimum branch requirements, potentially leading to half of Britain’s post offices closing.']
