On Gibraltar, the Minister has stated that our current EU negotiations are consistent with UK sovereignty. How will that be achieved, given our defence and RAF assets as well as any nuclear naval capability that the UK has in that region? How will our sovereignty be guaranteed at the border if there is a Schengen border post on the soil of Gibraltar?
Context
The UK is currently negotiating with the EU on Gibraltar, with the aim of safeguarding its sovereignty.

On the issue of international conventions, treaties and international law, including international humanitarian law and the international refugee convention, will the Attorney General place in the Library over the weekend a legal statement on the circumstances in which international law is trumped by clear and unambiguous words in an Act of Parliament? Will she include in that statement the necessary citations from the Supreme Court and the House of Lords?
Context
The question arises from the need to clarify when international law is overridden by clear words in an Act of Parliament, particularly concerning Palestine and Israel's compliance with international law.

My hon. Friend is a great and long-standing Member of this House, and is able to ask questions the answers to which might not automatically be obvious. We are talking here about Palestinian and Israeli counterparts being in compliance with international law, but I am of course delighted to say again that this Government are committed to international law—we have said that repeatedly from the Dispatch Box—and I do not see any need to lay a statement such as he suggests.

Does he recognise that sovereignty remains a key issue for Northern Ireland within the context of both EU lawmaking and current geopolitical tensions, including in Ukraine?

Negotiations regarding the Northern Ireland Protocol have been slow, with concerns over sovereignty and adherence to EU law.

My hon. Friend makes an important point. We have not seen enough progress from the EU and need more flexibility on trade and identity issues to resolve the situation quickly.

Does the Attorney General agree that it would not be practical or possible in law for international law to condone illegal immigration?

My hon. Friend is absolutely right. There are international rules and conventions which bind state parties, we honour those duties and take them very seriously. We also have a domestic regime of immigration and asylum which we can modify now that we left the European Union.
