Last week, Roman Osborne—a 10-year-old from my constituency—hand-delivered a letter to 10 Downing Street to tell the Prime Minister about an accident he had in February outside his primary school at Trimley St Martin, which left him spending three days in hospital and many more months recovering. Will the Prime Minister back my campaign #SaferAtTheGates, and will he call on Tory-led Suffolk county council to do the right thing by re-reviewing the road and putting the right safety measures in place outside Trimley St Martin and the other schools in my constituency?
Context
Roman Osborne, a 10-year-old from Trimley St Martin in Suffolk Coastal constituency, was involved in an accident outside his primary school that left him hospitalized and recovering for months. The issue highlights the need for safer crossings at schools.
The Prime Minister (Keir Starmer)
I thank Roman for his letter, which I took time to read last night. What an incredible young boy, aged just 10. I totally agree with him, and I say this to him: Roman, this is what we’re going to do—I have asked Ministers to work with all the right people to look at your school and get a safe crossing in place. The Roads Minister will be happy to meet my hon. Friend to discuss the road safety strategy.

There have been 170 cases of matricide in the past 15 years, with more women being killed by their sons than strangers. In a meeting earlier this year, I met Laura and Ian who are living in constant fear of physical harm from their son, despite supporting him through his rehabilitation after serving time in prison. They illustrate the complex mental health issues often linked to child-to-parent abuse. Will you support my request for a meeting with the relevant Minister to discuss the impact of child-to-parent abuse?
Context
In the past 15 years, there have been 170 cases of matricide; in 86% of these incidents, women were killed by their sons. Child-to-parent abuse often involves complex mental health issues and can lead to physical harm.
The Deputy Prime Minister (Mr David Lammy)
Matricide is a horrific crime, and we are committed to tackling it through our violence against women and girls strategy which aims to halve domestic violence against women over the next decade. I will arrange for the relevant Minister to meet my hon. Friend.

As chair of the Labour rural research group, I continually hear about the challenges facing rural communities, including access to education and transport infrastructure. Will the Minister set out the specific steps that the Cabinet Office is taking to ensure that rural voices and rural communities are meaningfully represented throughout Government decision making?
Context
The questioner is chair of the Labour rural research group and frequently hears about challenges facing rural communities, including access to education and transport infrastructure.
Darren Jones
I thank my hon. Friend for the great work that she does in Parliament and within the Labour party as a leading voice for rural communities across our country. On Government action, I point her to the rural taskforce, a cross-departmental group looking at how policies taken across Government can have a positive impact in rural communities while recognising the unique risk that we want to mitigate.

In Suffolk Coastal, about three quarters of households have indoor service for voice calls, compared with the national average of over 90%. Across Woodbridge, Bawdsey and the peninsula, so many households rely on network coverage, but they have zero service. Will the Minister meet me to discuss this important issue, which affects not just my constituency but rural constituencies as a whole?
Context
In Suffolk Coastal, only about three quarters of households have indoor service for voice calls compared to the national average of over 90%. This affects many rural areas such as Woodbridge, Bawdsey and the peninsula.
The Minister for Digital Government and Data (Ian Murray)
Many Members raise with me the particular issue of notspots in their constituencies, as well as where connectivity is not as good as we would like it to be. I would be very happy to offer a meeting to my hon. Friend.

What discussions has she had with Cabinet colleagues on providing additional funding for tourism in areas affected by major energy infrastructure projects? Suffolk Coastal hosts many such projects and I hear daily from businesses and constituents about their impact. Is she discussing this issue with the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero?
Context
Suffolk Coastal is home to numerous nationally significant infrastructure projects, which have raised concerns about the lack of coordination between tourism and energy development.
The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport (Stephanie Peacock)
We are committed to supporting the visitor economy in rural and coastal communities through ongoing dialogue with other Departments. The Department works closely with DESNZ and MHCLG to ensure that the needs of tourism are considered during planning and delivery of large-scale projects. Cumulative impacts of multiple NSIPs are also reviewed as they progress individually through the regime.

My constituent Lesley has been hosting and supporting a Ukrainian refugee, Ella, who after months of delay and difficulty has thankfully now received a visa extension. Ella’s case highlights the wider problems in the system: long waits, radio silence, and a lack of communication causing huge distress for refugees and their hosts. Can the Minister set out first what is being done to improve the visa application system generally, and secondly whether the Government will consider looking again at allowing Ukrainian refugees who do not want to or cannot return to Ukraine the pathway and chance of applying for indefinite leave to remain?
Context
The question addresses concerns about delays and difficulties faced by Ukrainian refugees in obtaining visa extensions, highlighting the case of a constituent named Lesley hosting a refugee named Ella who experienced long waits and lack of communication.
The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Home Department (Mike Tapp)
The UK Government have been clear from the outset that the Ukraine schemes are temporary and do not offer a direct route to settlement. The Ukraine permission extension scheme reflects our strong humanitarian commitment while also respecting Ukraine’s wish for its citizens to return, when safe, to support national recovery. The long-term position is under active consideration, and further details will be provided at the earliest opportunity.

Over the weekend, a drone attack targeted multiple regions in Ukraine, including Kyiv and Odesa. Reports suggest this is the biggest drone strike since Putin’s illegal invasion began. Does the Secretary of State agree that more must be done to secure a ceasefire?
Context
A recent drone attack on Ukraine, targeting Kyiv and Odesa, was the largest since Putin's invasion began. This raised concerns about the need to secure a ceasefire.
The Secretary of State for Defence (John Healey)
I agree with my hon. Friend, and she is right that it was the biggest drone attack in the past three and a half years since Putin’s illegal invasion. These air attacks are directed at civilian areas with civilian targets. I saw for myself this week the damage that brings when I stood outside the bombed-out building of the British Council in Kyiv, and I saw the determination of men and women—military and civilians alike—in their defiance to keep fighting in the face of Putin’s illegal invasion.

Will the Minister comment on what plans the Government have to ensure that we build in for nature, and specifically on the prospect of, and appetite for support for, swift bricks?
Context
The MP highlighted the housing crisis in rural areas and expressed interest in incorporating nature conservation into future development.
Matthew Pennycook
Although swift brick coverage is increasing, we want to drive up swift brick installation. As I made clear on Report of the Planning and Infrastructure Bill, we are considering using a new sweep of national policies for decision making, to require swift bricks to be incorporated into new buildings unless there are compelling reasons that preclude their use or would make them ineffective.

What plans does the Department have to bring unused military homes back into use for families in Suffolk Coastal?
Context
Investment of £117 million in Rock barracks will deliver new living accommodation and technical facilities.
The Minister for Defence Procurement and Industry (Maria Eagle)
We will do more to improve housing for military families. The defence housing strategy work includes an extensive review of our entire service family accommodation portfolio to determine how we will use our properties, which will report later this year.

What steps his Department has taken to commemorate Victory in Europe Day. Victory in Europe celebrations in Suffolk Coastal last week were a poignant reminder of the need to continue to press for peace today both in Ukraine and in securing an end to the war in Palestine. Does the Foreign Secretary agree with me that the lessons of world war two must not be forgotten as innocent civilians continue to face violence and warfare here in Europe and in the middle east?
Context
Victory in Europe celebrations in Suffolk Coastal last week were a reminder of the importance of remembering lessons from WWII and continuing to press for peace today.
The Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs (Mr David Lammy)
I am grateful to my hon. Friend. It is important to put on the record that the Commonwealth played a tremendous part in the second world war. Our European partners played an important part, and Europe benefited greatly from the sacrifices made to fight fascism. Wherever we see tyranny, we must continue to stand up for the rights of innocent people, and I was proud to spend the next day in Lviv standing with those who are fighting today.

I am concerned about the impact on coastal tourism in places such as Southwold, Aldeburgh, and Felixstowe. Can the Minister share with me what he is doing to support these areas?
Context
The tourism industry in East Suffolk is valued at £693 million and accounts for over 15% of local jobs, but has been impacted by the pandemic. Pre-pandemic visitor numbers are estimated to be down by 2 million.
The Minister for Creative Industries, Arts and Tourism (Chris Bryant)
I am keen to integrate creative industries into the visitor economy more effectively. This includes highlighting the Aldeburgh festival and other cultural attractions in East Suffolk such as Maggi Hambling's work in Saxmundham. We aim to attract 50 million international visitors by 2030, with a focus on encouraging tourists beyond London to visit coastal regions like those in Suffolk.

I welcome what the Minister said about public service reform being a shared challenge. Does she agree that it is in the interests of patients and people in Northern Ireland and England for the Executive and the Government to share knowledge and best practice?
Context
Recent discussions have led to a £18.2 billion settlement and funding agreements for health and other public services.
The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Northern Ireland (Fleur Anderson)
I absolutely agree. Public service transformation is not just about funding; it is about how to spend the money that the Northern Ireland Executive has with the record £18.2 billion settlement. Health is devolved, but we work together to share best practice and expertise, as well as recently agreeing £61 million of funding for multidisciplinary teams in GP surgeries. We will work together to create an NHS fit for the future, and I will be meeting the Health Minister again in Northern Ireland this week.

Discussions on best practice for public sector reform between the UK Government and the Northern Ireland Executive are ongoing. Recent agreements include £129 million in funding.
The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Northern Ireland (Fleur Anderson)
Public sector reform is a priority for this Government, and I regularly meet with Northern Ireland Executive Ministers, unions and public service providers. Most recently, the Government and Executive agreed £129 million of funding for public service transformation for health, special educational needs, justice and waste water.

In Saxmundham in my constituency, Dr Havard has led a campaign for 20 years to transform the healthcare centre into a one-stop community healthcare hub. His practice has already expanded services, transforming health locally. Does the Minister agree that the Saxmundham healthcare hub is an excellent example and model for what this Government are trying to do to transform community healthcare?

Will the Minister provide an update on the JobsPlus pilot and what assessment has been given to its future roll-out, including widening it to include Suffolk Coastal?
Context
The JobsPlus pilot program is designed to address employment barriers for residents in specific social housing communities.
The Minister for Employment (Alison McGovern)
JobsPlus pilots were launched in July 2024 and are helping to address employment barriers for the residents of 10 social housing communities. We plan to publish our initial evaluation in the summer, which will help us to understand more about how this type of innovative community-led employment might support our vision to get Britain working. I look forward to working with all Members, especially my hon. Friend, on the next steps for this project.

In my constituency, fly-tipping on farms and private land and the targeted theft of heating oil are causing profound problems for families and businesses alike. Will the Minister update me on progress to tackle rural crime, and will the Home Office consider setting up a rural taskforce, working across Departments, to tackle these issues?
Context
The question highlights specific issues such as fly-tipping and theft of heating oil, which are causing significant problems for families and businesses in rural areas. Jenny Riddell-Carpenter requests updates on the progress made to tackle these crimes.
Diana Johnson
I absolutely share my hon. Friend’s concerns about the extent of rural crime, particularly fly-tipping. Recent research shows that 80% of farmers say they are affected by fly-tipping. I am particularly concerned about the targeted theft of heating oil from families and businesses at this time of year. As I said, we will be strengthening neighbourhood policing and we will see more patrols in rural areas, which will help. We will also have forthcoming legislation to provide the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs with the powers it needs to support local authorities in exercising new fly-tipping enforcement powers.

I was delighted by Ofgem's announcement this morning that it now recommends that the proposed Nautilus interconnector should be located at the Isle of Grain, not on the Suffolk coast. Will the Minister meet me to discuss other National Grid projects in my constituency?
Context
The MP expressed disappointment with Ofgem's decision to locate an interconnector at the Isle of Grain instead of the Suffolk coast, citing consultations and brownfield sites. She requested a meeting with the Minister.
Michael Shanks
Ofgem's decisions are independent of Government. We have launched a strategic spatial energy plan to ensure holistic planning across the UK, taking into account various schemes like those mentioned by the hon. Member for Suffolk Coastal.

Adult social care is under extreme pressure, and one in four hospital beds are occupied by patients with dementia. Will the Minister commit himself to the delivery of a dementia strategy in the current Parliament?
Context
One in four hospital beds are occupied by patients with dementia.
Stephen Kinnock
That is an extremely important question. I recognise that dementia is a huge issue impacting on the entire country and, indeed, many Members on both sides of the House. We are absolutely committed to research fundamental to addressing the problem, and our fair pay agreement is about not just pay but training and terms and conditions. We will be ramping up dementia training for our adult social care workforce.

Housing associations are the second largest investor in employment support in the UK, second only to the Department for Work and Pensions. Their work invests in employment support for some of the hardest-to-reach communities, including rural communities such as mine in Suffolk Coastal. Will the Minister commit to working with housing associations to co-design and co-invest employment support over this Parliament?
Context
Housing associations are significant investors in employment support, especially for hard-to-reach communities such as rural areas.
Alison McGovern
I thank my hon. Friend again for her very welcome point. Housing associations are extremely important for connecting with residents, who often have multiple vulnerabilities. When thinking about the journey into work we need joined up services between the NHS, the local authority and our housing associations. They will be a part of the future partnership, and I look forward to working with her for her constituency.

Significant Energy Infrastructure Projects: Suffolk Coast
16 September 2025
Responding: Michael Shanks
Main Concerns
["Up to 30% of Britain’s future energy is expected to be generated in, or transmitted through, Jenny Riddell-Carpenter's constituency. The lack of coordination between the plans for nationally significant infrastructure projects within a small 10-mile radius poses challenges for local communities and important national landscapes."]
Specific Asks
['The Government should work with Jenny Riddell-Carpenter to require developers to reconsider their proposals to minimise disruption to people and the environment. There needs to be oversight of the cumulative impact of all NSIP schemes in an area, which could be managed by a new overarching body.']
SEND Education Support
25 February 2025
Responding: Catherine McKinnell
Main Concerns
['The debate highlights the severe challenges faced by children with special educational needs and disabilities, noting a 140% increase in children with EHCP from 2015 to 2024. The total number of children and young people with SEND is estimated at 1.9 million. In Suffolk Coastal, over 50% of surveyed children missed school due to unmet needs, and one in ten had been waiting more than a year for an EHCP.']
Specific Asks
['The MP calls for a national conversation about SEND that includes parents and young people, urging the Minister to visit her rural constituency to see the crisis firsthand. She also seeks sustainable funding plans for the SEND system.']
