As the Secretary of State knows, there is a fantastic site on the edge of the M1 at Ratcliffe-on-Soar—the last of the coal-fired power station sites to be decommissioned—which will make a superb site for clean energy generation. Will he commit to meeting me and Claire Ward, Mayor of the East Midlands, to discuss it further?
Context
There is a former coal-fired power station site at Ratcliffe-on-Soar on the edge of the M1 that has decommissioning potential for clean energy generation. The site represents a significant opportunity for sustainable development and economic growth.
Michael Shanks
I visited Ratcliffe-on-Soar for the closure ceremony. It was a good example of a just transition done well, and an historic moment of consensus, delivering the phase-out of coal across our country. I am happy to meet my hon. Friend. I recently met the mayor to talk about the future of that site, which has huge potential.

I am particularly concerned about teacher retention at a school in my constituency, St Peter’s in Ruddington, which was condemned just before Christmas following an emergency evacuation due to structural issues. I put on the record my sincere thanks to staff, parents, children and local organisations for their support. May I please push Ministers for a swift decision about what will happen next? It is very destabilising for parents and teachers to not know what form a rebuild will take, so I will leave this with the Secretary of State.
Context
There has been an emergency evacuation due to structural issues at St Peter’s school in Ruddington, causing concern among parents and teachers about the future of the school.
The Secretary of State for Education (Bridget Phillipson)
My hon. Friend is right to push us on this issue. I know he has been working very closely with my ministerial colleague who is responsible for this area, and I can assure him that we will move as fast as we can. We understand the pressure that this is placing on the school and on the local community, and I will make sure he gets an update following this session.

What is the FCDO doing to help address the global erosion of democracy?
Context
The MP inquired about measures being taken to counteract the global trend towards democratic erosion, highlighting work by organizations like the Westminster Foundation for Democracy.
The Minister of State, Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (Stephen Doughty)
My hon. Friend raises a crucial point. We work closely with our partners on that issue and support democratic institutions and values, including through the Westminster Foundation for Democracy. We fund election observation, champion media freedom and provide leadership in different fora.

T2. The University of Nottingham announced last week that it is closing 16 courses as part of cost-saving measures due to limited research income making these courses less financially viable. What steps is the Secretary of State taking to ensure that her huge research and development budget gets to frontline institutions and universities that are at the heart of our vision for growing the economy?
Context
The University of Nottingham is closing 16 courses due to limited research income, making these courses less financially viable.
The Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology (Liz Kendall)
I am happy to look into what my hon. Friend says in more detail. He knows that our post-16 education and skills White Paper sets out our vision and plan for universities, including record investment from my Department into research and development, and protecting the strategic priorities grant for science, technology, engineering and maths subjects. There is more that we can do, and I am happy to discuss it with him further.

I thank the Foreign Secretary for that update on Jamaica and the diligence of the FCDO in preparing for events there. Tomorrow I am hosting Hong Kong Watch in Parliament as it releases its latest report on the erosion of Hong Kong’s autonomy. The report highlights how Beijing has increasingly sought to dismantle Hong Kong’s autonomy while exploiting the privileges of Hong Kong’s special status. This is increasingly having an impact on business operations in Hong Kong, and is something that is well understood by the Government, but has yet to be fully recognised, including in last week’s FCDO six-monthly report. Will the UK consider additional steps to push back against these violations of China’s international treaty obligations?
Context
The Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs provided an update on Hurricane Melissa's impact in Jamaica, including fatalities, displaced people, and UK support measures.
Yvette Cooper
We strongly condemn China’s non-compliance with the joint declaration, as described in the latest published six-monthly report, which details the continued deterioration of rights and freedoms in Hong Kong. We have continually pressed China to uphold the rights of Hongkongers; its non-compliance is one of the reasons we remain steadfastly committed to the British national overseas visa route.

Two of my local firms—MJC Law and Nottingham Law Centre—have contacted me about this issue. MJC Law said: 'This has left legal aid law firms, often small businesses, to decide whether to take on the risk of cases and hope they will be approved and paid retrospectively'. Cash flow could become a genuinely serious issue for such firms, so what steps are being taken to support them? For how long does the Minister envisage firms dealing with this situation? Finally, on GDPR notices, is it sufficient that the LAA has simply provided a notice on its webpage?
Context
The Legal Aid Agency suffered a criminal cyber-attack, leading to issues with its IT systems and the impact on legal aid providers in Rushcliffe. Local firms such as MJC Law and Nottingham Law Centre have reported difficulties due to the lack of proper contingency measures.
Sarah Sackman (Minister of State, Ministry of Justice)
I pay tribute to the legal aid providers across the country who have kept going through this difficult time and who do vital work in the sector. As part of the package of contingency business measures, we have delegated more decision making to providers and we have committed to backdating criminal legal aid applications. I must assure the House that we will turn the systems back on only when we can be sure that they are secure and we can guarantee that we are protecting people’s data.

As the chair of the all-party parliamentary group on fusion energy, I know that fusion technology not only has the potential to create thousands of jobs, but could also be the answer to our long-term clean energy security needs. Does the Minister agree with me that supporting fusion is a good example of the Government’s crowding in private sector investment, creating jobs and winning investment for places like the east midlands?
Context
The MP is concerned about the potential of fusion technology to create jobs and address long-term clean energy needs.
Kerry McCarthy
My hon. Friend is a real champion for his constituency, and for the benefits that the development of fusion will bring. We continue to invest and to have discussions with international counterparts. There is a very bright future for fusion, and for his constituents as a result.

What steps are being taken to review school transport costs overall? Will the limited school options available to rural parents be considered when updating the home-to-school travel policy?
Context
Parents in a rural constituency express concerns about limited school options and lack of free transport for distant schools.
The Minister for School Standards (Catherine McKinnell)
The Department’s home-to-school travel policy aims to ensure that no child is prevented from accessing education due to a lack of transport. I am keen to understand how well home-to-school transport is supporting children to access educational opportunity. I am working closely with officials on that, and I will bear my hon. Friend’s comments and concerns in mind as that work continues.

While I wholeheartedly welcome the £100 million capital funding boost for hospices announced before Christmas, 17 members of staff at Nottinghamshire hospice, which provides care for family members in their own homes, have recently been told they are at risk of redundancy. Can the Minister please expand on how the Government will support organisations such as this to continue to deliver excellent care in the community?
Context
Nottinghamshire hospice, serving Rushcliffe constituency and providing home care services, is experiencing significant financial challenges with 17 staff members at risk of redundancy.
The Minister for Care (Stephen Kinnock)
I thank my hon. Friend for this important question, and I commend the work of hospices such as Nottinghamshire hospice in his constituency, which does a wonderful job for people in Rushcliffe. The investment of £100 million will help hospices to provide quality end-of-life care to patients and their families. This funding can be used to improve IT systems, make it easier for GPs and hospitals to share vital data on patients, and support outreach services to deliver care at home.

My constituents have contacted me regarding sentences for climate protesters, finding them excessively long due to overcrowded prisons. Will my hon. Friend confirm if there are plans to reassess sentencing for such offences in light of overcrowded prisons?
Context
Several constituents are concerned about sentences handed down to climate protesters. They view these sentences as too long given the pressure on prison systems.
Nicholas Dakin
The right to protest is an important part of our democracy, but it has to be exercised within the law. Sentencing in individual cases is, of course, a matter for independent courts.

I have lived and worked in the western Balkans, where Governments continue to increase efforts to tackle human trafficking, exploitation and coercion. What steps are proactively being taken with Albania and other western Balkan and Mediterranean countries to tackle human trafficking at source?
Context
Governments in the Western Balkan region are increasing efforts to tackle human trafficking, exploitation and coercion. This raises concerns about proactively addressing the issue.
Stephen Doughty
The Government are committed to working more closely with partners across Europe, including Albania and partners across the western Balkans, to tackle people trafficking and the gangs profiting from it. That has been a regular part of my bilateral discussions. In July, we announced steps to reinforce our co-operation with Europol and committed £4 million towards the Rome process—an Italian Government project to tackle the root causes of irregular migration.

Other Parliamentary Activity
Debates led and petitions presented.
Universities: Statutory Duty of Care
13 January 2026
Responding: Josh MacAlister
Main Concerns
['The debate follows an e-petition with 128,000 signatures and discusses the mental health struggles at universities. Over the past decade, the proportion of students disclosing mental health conditions to their university has risen sharply from under 1% in 2010 to nearly 6% in 2022-23. The Office for National Statistics reports an average of 160 suicides among higher education students in England and Wales each year between 2016 and 2023.']
Specific Asks
['The debate asks whether the health, wellbeing and safety responsibilities that universities owe to their students are sufficiently clear, consistent and enforceable under current legal frameworks.']
Immigration Reforms: Humanitarian Visa Routes
25 November 2025
Responding: Mike Tapp
Main Concerns
["Approximately 200,000 Hongkongers have come to the UK since 2021 and are now working towards indefinite leave to remain after five years. The Home Office's immigration White Paper proposed increasing the standard qualifying period for settlement to 10 years, creating significant uncertainty for Hongkongers. However, recent clarifications exempt BNO visa holders from the earned settlement criteria, retaining a five-year route to ILR. Nevertheless, concerns remain about income and English language requirements that may exclude many eligible applicants."]
Specific Asks
['The Government should reconsider income and language requirements for BNO visa holders to ensure they align with the humanitarian nature of the scheme and do not disproportionately impact those already contributing to UK society.']

Important Context
- - Ministers answer questions rather than asking them, so have different activity patterns
- - Activity quantity doesn't measure quality or effectiveness of representation
- - Some MPs focus more on constituency work than parliamentary questions
- - Newly elected MPs will have less parliamentary history
