Medway Maritime hospital in my constituency of Gillingham and Rainham has today received a concerning Care Quality Commission report, following an inspection of the emergency department in February last year. Testimonies include patients having to wait up to 50 hours to be seen, and others being told to soil themselves because staff were not available to take them to the bathroom. Will the Prime Minister please outline what this Government will do urgently to tackle the crisis in our NHS, after 14 years of Tory mismanagement?
Context
Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham and Rainham has received a concerning Care Quality Commission report, highlighting significant issues such as patients waiting up to 50 hours for care.
The Prime Minister (Keir Starmer)
I thank my hon. Friend for raising this case. Her constituents deserve the highest standard of care. The Conservatives left the NHS in dire straits. We are investing £26 billion and our reform plan will cut waiting lists. I am really pleased to say that waiting lists are down and we have delivered over 2 million extra appointments to get the NHS back on its feet.
Assessment
The Prime Minister acknowledged the crisis but did not provide specific urgent measures for Medway Maritime Hospital.

I recently visited MidKent college, which serves my constituency of Gillingham and Rainham. It teaches valuable construction skills to young people, but I have been informed that it faces significant challenges in recruiting teachers to deliver those courses. Does the Prime Minister agree that proper skills training and having the teachers necessary to deliver it is absolutely vital to growing our economy and building the homes that we need for the future? Will he agree to set up a meeting with the relevant Minister to discuss the recruitment challenges that some colleges face?
Context
MidKent College faces significant challenges in recruiting teachers to deliver valuable construction skills courses.
Tulip Siddiq
Skilling up the next generation is vital to kick-start economic growth. Our plan for change will rebuild Britain by delivering 1.5 million new homes. That is why we have established Skills England, and are reforming our planning system and training the workforce. I will ensure that my hon. Friend gets the meeting that she wants with the relevant Minister.

I welcome the Government’s commitment to restoring the family doctor and the recruitment of 1,700 additional GPs nationwide, but my constituency has yet to benefit from that. Concern has been expressed to me about the expansion of the additional roles reimbursement scheme to include only newly qualified GPs, which it is feared may be too restrictive. I have met local GP partners who share that concern, so will the Secretary of State meet us to discuss how the scheme can better support areas such as mine?
Context
Concern has been expressed about the expansion of the additional roles reimbursement scheme to include only newly qualified GPs, which is seen as too restrictive. Local GP partners share this concern.
The Secretary of State for Health and Social Care (Wes Streeting)
We are investing an extra £900 million in general practice, and have reformed the GP contract to help bring back the family doctor and end the 8 am scramble. That contract reform included further changes to make it easier to recruit GPs through the scheme. As my hon. Friend will see shortly when we publish the 10-year plan for health, general practice is at the heart of our proposals to build a neighbourhood health service. I am keen to work with her and with GPs to make it even easier to ensure that qualified GPs can get jobs and patients can get GP appointments, and I should be delighted to meet her.

The strategic defence review will make Wales and the rest of the UK safer at home and stronger abroad, just as it will my constituency of Gillingham and Rainham. Does the Minister agree that the SDR is further proof that only Labour can be trusted to protect our Union, while Opposition Members wring their hands, wish they did more when they were in power, or look for ways to make apologies for foreign aggression?
Context
The strategic defence review was launched with a focus on increased defence spending, aiming to create new jobs and improve the economy.
The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Wales (Dame Nia Griffith)
I agree with my hon. Friend. The Conservatives failed to deliver a plan for our defence industry, and left our homes for heroes in poor condition; and while Plaid Cymru plots to leave NATO, and Reform cosies up to Putin, Labour invests in our military, our security and our veterans.

A report by the Gambling Commission released in November 2024 showed that the proportion of young people between the ages of 11 and 17 experiencing problem gambling increased by 114% in just one year. Will the Secretary of State please outline the steps her Department is taking to prevent young people from becoming victims of problem gambling?
Context
A Gambling Commission report showed a 114% increase in problem gambling among young people aged 11 to 17 over one year.
The Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport (Lisa Nandy)
I share my hon. Friend’s view that there is clear evidence of particular problems for young people. The online slot stake limit will come into force on 9 April for the £5 limit and on 21 May for the £2 limit for younger adults, targeting those most at risk.

Will the Minister assure my constituents that the Government are committed to supporting the retention of community assets such as this, and will he agree to meet me to discuss the Flying Saucer campaign and broader challenges in reclaiming and retaining assets?
Context
The Flying Saucer pub is an asset of community value in Gillingham and Rainham, with a campaign to bring it back into local hands.
Alex Norris
The new community right to buy will cover local pubs such as the Flying Saucer, which are assets of community value. I would be keen to meet my hon. Friend to discuss this issue.

What steps her Department is taking to support community ownership of local assets, and how will round 4 of the community ownership fund be implemented?
Context
The community ownership fund supports community groups in taking sustainable ownership of assets. Round 4 of the fund is expected soon.
Alex Norris
The community ownership fund has enabled community groups across the UK to sustainably own assets that benefit their local communities. The English Devolution Bill introduces a new right to buy valued community assets, helping locals acquire spaces when they come up for sale. I would be keen to meet the hon. Friend and campaigners on the issue of the Flying Saucer pub.

High streets up and down the country are the backbone of our communities, but over the years have been facing decline. For example, Gillingham High Street in my constituency, where only yesterday we launched our Love Gillingham campaign and initiative, faces numerous challenges. Will the Minister agree to meet me to discuss some of those challenges, as well as the possibility of a compulsory register of properties on high streets, so that councils can easily engage with owners to find new uses for them when they fall vacant?
Context
The question follows a discussion on the challenges faced by Gillingham High Street, including declining footfall and vacant premises.
Alex Norris
I thank my hon. Friend for that question. I totally agree on the important role that healthy and vibrant high streets play for communities. Initiatives such as Love Gillingham are vital in bringing local people together to create high streets that work for them. Ensuring that local authorities and the communities they serve have the tools they need to support the high street is a priority.

Important Context
- - Ministers answer questions rather than asking them, so have different activity patterns
- - Activity quantity doesn't measure quality or effectiveness of representation
- - Some MPs focus more on constituency work than parliamentary questions
- - Newly elected MPs will have less parliamentary history
