David Burton-Sampson moved a Bill to make provision about the marketing, advertising, and offering for sale of wet wipes; to make provision about the labelling of wet wipes; and for connected purposes. He highlighted the importance of water quality for his constituents, mentioning sewage dumps and the formation of quarterly water summits to address water problems. He noted that blockages in sewers, often caused by wet wipes, lead to sewage discharges into the environment. While welcoming the Government's legislation banning plastic in wet wipes, he emphasised the need for clearer labelling to prevent flushing of non-flushable items. He proposed that wet wipes should be clearly labelled as non-flushable, with flushable wipes needing to pass rigorous testing. The Bill aims to protect the sewerage network, plumbing, and wildlife.
