The MP raised concerns about the unsustainable management of water in England, highlighting the cycle of drought and flooding, and the inefficiency of current water infrastructure. He emphasised the need to capture rainwater for beneficial use, reduce the mixing of rainwater with sewage, and implement decentralised water management systems to address both water scarcity and excess. He proposed three key changes: requiring rainwater harvesting in new homes, implementing schedule 3 of the Flood and Water Management Act, and allowing retro-splitting of household drains. He argued that these measures would save money, reduce sewage discharge, and improve resilience to climate change impacts.

Government Response
The Minister thanked the MP for Taunton and Wellington for his speech and agreed with much of his analysis. She emphasised the importance of nature-based solutions, sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS), and the review of building regulations to enable water reuse systems. She acknowledged the need to manage rainwater where it falls, reduce the use of drinking water for non-potable purposes, and support farmers in holding more water. The Minister committed to better joined-up water planning, and stressed the Government's ongoing efforts to clean up rivers, tackle pollution, and improve resilience to floods and droughts. She highlighted the upcoming Flood Action Week and the national planning policy framework requirements for SUDS in new developments.
