The UK announced an additional £51.8m in funding to support the BVD Ebola outbreak response in the DRC, bringing the total UK bilateral support to £26.9 million, including £21 million for the response in the DRC, support to Uganda, and up to £5 million for research and development into vaccines and therapeutics. The outbreak is the fastest growing on record, with 6,250 confirmed cases and 2,744 confirmed deaths as of 1 September. The UK aims to contain the disease at source, support the African-led response, reduce humanitarian and secondary health impacts, strengthen regional preparedness, and protect the UK public.
The UK is working to contain the outbreak through surveillance and contact tracing, expanding treatment and case-management capacity, improving infection prevention and control, supporting frontline health workers, and engaging communities to stop transmission. The UK is also providing regional preparedness and coordination support through the Africa Centre for Disease Control and Prevention and deploying experts to support preparedness and response across the region.
