The possibility of the House of Lords being temporarily based in the neighbouring QEII centre during restoration and renewal is under consideration. The R and R programme has worked closely with MHCLG, the freehold owner of the centre, and other Government departments to understand the implications. Direct engagement with the events sector has been limited due to commercial sensitivities. However, available data suggests that conference centres in Westminster and London have sufficient spare capacity to accommodate displaced events.
Emphasises the importance of the QEII centre for hosting major international events, highlighting its economic value including hundreds of jobs, thousands of hotel rooms, significant spend and investment across supply chains. He raises concerns that reducing capacity could negatively affect the ability to attract major business events to the UK, potentially giving competitors an advantage.
