Opened the debate
I am pleased to have secured this debate to address the shocking injustice faced by residents of the Isles of Scilly regarding affordable transport. Services in Scotland are heavily subsidised, contrasting with the lack of similar support for the Isles of Scilly despite the additional challenges posed by their remote location and reliance on tourism. The cost of passenger transport, freight, and air travel is significantly higher than in Scotland or other parts of the UK. I call upon the Minister to work closely with me, the council, transport providers, and others to alleviate these pressures and provide support to reduce costs of living.
Government Response
I congratulate Andrew George for securing this debate and acknowledge the severe challenges facing residents in the Isles of Scilly. The Government is providing record levels of investment in transport, including £30 million for bus grants and over £4.5 million for active travel projects in Cornwall. Specific to the Isles of Scilly, we are supporting road maintenance with £291,000 and active travel initiatives with £140,000. We remain committed to delivering better, sustainable, and more affordable transport provision. Although all air and sea services operate commercially without public subsidy, I reassure that any at-risk routes would be assessed for intervention. I also acknowledge the fiscal pressures faced by the council and will reflect on offering further concessions. The UK emissions trading scheme does not apply to vessels below 5,000 gross tonnage, including those serving the Isles of Scilly. We continue engagement with the islands to address challenges.
