How the Debate Unfolded

MPs spoke in turn to share their views and ask questions. Here's what each person said:

Government Response

Government Response
With permission, I would like to make a further statement on coronavirus. We are introducing new measures such as the rule of six, stronger enforcement in hospitality venues, and increased testing capacity with plans for rapid tests to help people lead more normal lives. Defends government's approach to testing, clarifies current policies on eligibility for testing and school closures. Emphasises ongoing work with various organisations including universities and businesses. Provides some details on the expansion of testing capacity but does not provide specific figures. My hon. Friend is absolutely right and speaks with great knowledge, experience and eloquence on this matter. We have to protect livelihoods as much as possible, in the same way that we are trying to protect education as much as possible. That does mean sometimes that we have to take measures on social contact that people would prefer not to see, but unfortunately the measures that the Prime Minister outlined yesterday, and which I set out in my statement, are, in my judgment, absolutely necessary both to keeping the virus under control and to protecting education and the economy as much as possible. Responded to various questions by emphasising the secure nature of testing procedures, reviewing eligibility for tests, enhancing local enforcement powers, working on matching demand-supply locally and committing extra resources where needed. Also mentioned forthcoming contact tracing app and importance of learning from global approaches.
