Opened the debate
The debate was prompted by a letter from an independent pharmacist in the MP's constituency, Mr Tim Gibbs. The speech highlighted how pharmacists stayed open during the pandemic at significant risk to themselves and their staff, often delivering medicines to vulnerable patients at their own cost. It emphasised that these pharmacies face considerable financial insecurity due to additional costs incurred without being able to pass them on to customers. The MP expressed concern over potential closures of independent pharmacies in the next year or two if support isn't provided. He also mentioned the public's strong support for community pharmacists and suggested that expanding their role could help relieve pressure from other parts of the NHS.

The Minister emphasised the Government’s ongoing dialogue with pharmacists and their organisations, noting that further discussions are underway regarding additional funding to address costs incurred at the peak of the pandemic.
