Government Statement
On August 9, Belarus held presidential elections that were neither free nor fair. The election campaign saw the imprisonment of opposition candidates and the arrests of hundreds of their supporters. On polling day, fraud and falsification of results occurred with local independent observers, including members of the British embassy, barred from witnessing the count and threatened. Thousands took to the streets in peaceful protest demanding fresh elections. In response, Belarusian authorities launched a campaign of violence against protesters, beating detainees and threatening female protesters. The UK has worked with international partners to condemn these actions and initiate an OSCE investigation. The UK is prepared to adopt targeted sanctions against those responsible for human rights abuses and vote rigging. The government has doubled financial support to human rights groups, independent media organisations and community groups by providing an extra £1.5 million over the next two years, including £800,000 for journalists in Belarus.

Shadow Comment

Lisa Nandy
Shadow Comment
The shadow Secretary of State thanked the Foreign Secretary for his statement and expressed support for the UK's efforts to work with allies to impose Magnitsky sanctions on those involved. She asked if Lukashenko has been discussed for inclusion in these measures and about progress on ensuring corruption is covered under the Magnitsky legislation recently passed by this House. She also inquired about steps being taken to protect academics, increase Chevening scholarships, support protesters who have lost their jobs or been blacklisted, and protect members of the arts and cultural community from harassment and intimidation. The shadow Secretary called for protection of BBC Russian service funding and journalists working there, as well as discussions with the Home Secretary on provisions for Belarusians seeking asylum in the UK.
