Government Statement
The Minister thanked John Healey for his urgent question and highlighted the armed forces' role during the pandemic, noting that they have received 420 MACA requests this year, with 341 being covid-related. The MoD has a winter support force of approximately 7,500 deployable personnel in addition to embedded medics in the NHS and defence scientists at DSTL. They are currently supporting 41 MACA tasks including whole-town testing pilot in Liverpool and personal protective equipment distribution. Defence is prepared to contribute further as requested through the MACA system.

John Healey
Shadow Comment
The shadow Secretary of State praised the armed forces' efforts and called for more regular updates on decisions made about using military support. He asked if similar MACA support would be provided to other local authority areas, questioned how sustainable the deployment is, and inquired about its impact on training and standing commitments. Additionally, he sought information on the military's involvement in vaccine planning and delivery.
