Opened the debate
The Nord Stream 2 pipeline, bypassing central and eastern European NATO allies, poses a significant threat to NATO security and cohesion. Over 35 Conservative MPs have expressed concern over the project's impact on energy supplies and leverage Russia has over these countries. Despite initial caution during Brexit negotiations, the UK now, as an independent nation, must lead in stopping the project due to its implications for European energy security and the stability of central and eastern Europe. The pipeline will double Russian gas capacity into Germany, undermining transit routes through Ukraine and other countries, thereby threatening their economic and national security.

Government Response
I am grateful for my hon. Friend's efforts and agree that Nord Stream 2 poses significant concerns for European energy security, particularly for central and eastern Europe. The UK government has repeatedly expressed its concerns about the project's implications, especially regarding Ukraine’s transit role and economic stability. While Nord Stream 2 will not directly impact UK gas supply due to diverse and reliable sources of our own production and imports from Norway and other countries, it could have serious implications for energy security in central and eastern Europe which are heavily reliant on Russian gas. The Government supports initiatives like the three seas initiative to promote co-operation and development across central and eastern Europe, and we will continue to raise concerns about Nord Stream 2 with key partners while encouraging European diversification of energy supplies.
