Government Statement
The Government recognises the importance of the UK's world-leading cultural and creative industries, demonstrated by providing £1.57 billion in support during the pandemic. During Brexit negotiations, they sought to push for arrangements allowing performers and artists to work easily across Europe but were rejected by the EU. As a result, UK cultural professionals will now need to check immigration and visitor rules for each member state where they intend to tour, leading to potential visa or work permit requirements. The Government is delivering an extensive engagement programme with Arts Council England and other sector bodies to help clarify new requirements. They are also looking at ways to make life easier for those working in the creative industries and will continue dialogue with affected sectors.

Shadow Comment
The response from the Minister is disappointing as it means that tours are beyond financial reach for future musicians due to visas and carnets. This not only affects new musicians but also increases costs and red tape for the whole creative sector, including crews, technicians, set designers, and transport. The EU offered a 90-day deal which was turned down by the Government despite promising no change in arrangements. There are now 263,000 petitioners calling for this issue to be resolved. The SNP calls on the Minister to restart talks with the EU immediately to secure necessary arrangements.
