Government Statement
The Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Sajid Javid, announced measures in response to a new variant of the coronavirus. He noted that while there are no detected cases of this new variant (B.1.1.529) in the UK currently, it is under investigation due to its high number of mutations which may render current vaccines less effective and could increase transmissibility compared to the delta variant. Javid highlighted the exponential growth in cases in South Africa, especially concerning given significant natural immunity in some populations there. The minister announced that six southern African countries would be added to England's travel red list from midday onwards, with specific measures for UK/Irish residents and non-residents arriving from these countries. He emphasised the ongoing monitoring of this situation and the importance of receiving booster shots as eligibility permits.

Shadow Comment
The shadow Secretary of State, Alex Norris, welcomed the swift action taken by the Government but questioned the specific selection of countries for red listing. He raised concerns about the global distribution of vaccines and inquired if any work is being done with affected nations to ensure they have adequate supplies and infrastructure. Norris also highlighted issues related to testing capacity and rumours about scaling down Test and Trace services, urging for continued support for public buildings, schools, and businesses. He emphasised the need for addressing sick pay and revisiting cost-free measures like mask-wearing in public spaces.
