Government Statement

Government Statement
The Minister of State, Ministry of Defence, Ben Wallace provided a detailed update on the UK's defence support during the national COVID-19 response. He highlighted that since January, the Ministry of Defence has been involved in over 485 military assistance to civilian authority requests (MACAs), with nearly half related to domestic COVID efforts. Currently, there are 56 ongoing tasks supporting 13 government departments and over 4,000 personnel committed to these operations, alongside an additional 10,000 held at high readiness. Wallace emphasised the military's involvement in building Nightingale hospitals, distributing personal protective equipment (PPE), and providing logistical support for testing programmes. He also mentioned the deployment of troops during the Christmas period to manage border disruptions caused by the new variant, conducting approximately 40,000 tests. Additionally, he discussed the military’s contribution to vaccination efforts through planning assistance and establishing a quick reaction force of medically trained personnel. He praised the work of armed forces in less visible roles such as planners embedded with local authorities and scientific teams at the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL). The statement concluded with reassurances about maintaining operational readiness for other security tasks despite pandemic responsibilities.

Shadow Comment

John Healey
Shadow Comment
The shadow Minister of State, Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, John Healey welcomed the minister's statement but expressed frustration over the underutilization of military resources. He highlighted that fewer than 4,000 out of a winter support force of 14,000 are currently deployed despite what the Secretary of State described as 'the most significant domestic operation in peacetime.' Healey questioned how many troops would be deployed by the end of the month and when all medical personnel teams would be posted to assist with vaccinations. He also suggested offering military help to improve Test and Trace services, which have been failing. Concerning testing for service personnel, he asked about regular testing systems and vaccination plans.
