Opened the debate
Derek Twigg, MP for Widnes and Halewood, raised concerns about the critical state of the Sankey canal, an historic waterway that has played a significant role in local industry and community life. The canal's closure in 1963 and subsequent dereliction led to parts being filled in, but cosmetic restoration was carried out between 1979-83, with Fiddler’s Ferry power station supplying water since the early 1980s. When the power station ceased operations in 2020, efforts to find a sustainable alternative failed. Water levels dropped significantly from April 2022 onwards, impacting local wildlife and causing distress among residents who rely on it for recreation and mental health benefits. Twigg urged the government to provide support alongside local councils, the Environment Agency, and United Utilities in finding a long-term solution.

Government Response
Minister Steve Double acknowledged the historical significance of the Sankey canal and the distress caused by its current state. He thanked Halton Borough Council for their efforts to address the situation, noting that the Environment Agency has been providing support for fish rescue operations. The Minister stated that DEFRA is reviewing grant funding for the Canal and River Trust but did not offer additional financial commitments beyond existing grants. Double offered his assistance in facilitating a local solution and invited Derek Twigg to meet with him to discuss further.
