Children are expensive, with costs rising sharply due to inflation. The cost of raising a child in the UK is around £160,000 for a family and £190,000 for single parents. Newborns face significant financial pressures, including a 75% increase in nappy prices since 2020, leading to monthly costs rising by £41. Single parents are particularly affected as statutory maternity pay has increased by only 3.6%. The issue is not just about finances but also the environmental impact of disposable items and waste generated from new purchases for infants. Baby banks provide a solution by offering families an opportunity to reuse equipment, toys, clothes, and access vital support networks, addressing both poverty and sustainability issues. Currently, around 200 baby banks in the UK are run by volunteers who help connect parents with essential resources, including clothing and equipment. The campaign 'This Mum Votes' aims to understand and address family pressures, emphasising the importance of investing in early years support through initiatives such as Little Village, which has supported over 25,000 children since its launch in 2016. Baby banks also play a crucial role during emergencies, providing essential goods for newborns when hospitals cannot discharge parents without them. Moreover, baby banks are trusted by sceptical parents and can act as a bridge to further services. Despite their benefits, some local authorities do not support these initiatives, hindering their growth and effectiveness.

Government Response
The Minister acknowledges the pressing issues highlighted by Stella Creasy, such as the rising cost of living for new parents. She expresses gratitude for advice received during her own parenthood journey and highlights the importance of community support through initiatives like baby banks. The Government is committed to providing targeted support for families with newborns and young children, including schemes such as the Sure Start maternity grant, NHS healthy start scheme, family hubs, childcare offer for universal credit recipients, cost of living payments, and the household support fund. She also mentions a £300 million investment in transforming start for life services from conception to age two. The Minister emphasises the environmental benefits of baby banks and encourages parents to claim all eligible benefits available through government schemes. She commits to investigating further how government resources can be better utilised to support these community initiatives, aiming to address both immediate financial pressures and long-term sustainability goals.
