Opened the debate
On April 1, 1982, Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands. Despite skepticism from some quarters, Britain quickly assembled a taskforce to liberate the islands. Over 74 days, about 30,000 personnel faced extreme hardship and intense combat. Tragically, 255 British military members did not survive. Jarvis emphasised the need to support veterans and commemorate those who fought. He highlighted specific battles like Mount Longdon and the bravery of Sergeant Ian McKay VC, a paratrooper from his constituency. The speech concluded by stressing that we must never forget the sacrifices made in the Falklands War.
