Opened the debate
As chair of the all-party parliamentary group on Algeria, I feel privileged to sponsor this debate celebrating 60 years of UK-Algerian relations. Throughout my time working with Algeria, I have focused on four main pillars: energy, trade, security and culture. The history between our nations is rich, dating back thousands of years through Roman times, Christian influence and Islamic rule. Since Algerian independence in 1962, the UK has been a steadfast ally, supporting economic development and cultural ties. Today, we look to strengthen these relations further through trade agreements, education exchanges, security cooperation and renewable energy partnerships.
