Opened the debate
Today is World Biosphere Day, marking the importance of living sustainably while maintaining a harmonious relationship with nature. The UNESCO Man and the Biosphere programme has designated seven biosphere reserves in the UK since its inception in 1971. North Devon was home to the UK's first biosphere reserve, launched in 1976, covering land and sea management across a vast area. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the redefined North Devon Biosphere Reserve, which incorporates conservation, learning and research, and sustainable development through partnerships among various organisations. The reserve includes protected sites such as fixed and mobile sand dune systems, broad-leaved woodlands, and culm grassland. Projects include a £1.8 million improvement project along the River Taw to decrease polluted surface run-off and improve water quality in places like Instow. Additionally, North Devon’s biosphere has driven local nature recovery plans and pioneered projects in the 25-year environmental plan, including natural capital strategies for the region.

Isle of Wight
The Isle of Wight recently received biosphere status after a campaign led by its area of outstanding natural beauty organisation. The designation is unique in combining the human, natural and maritime worlds, unlike UK law which fragments nature protection and planning.

Government Response
The Minister thanked Selaine Saxby for securing the debate and recognised the importance of biosphere reserves in achieving sustainable development goals. She highlighted North Devon's success, noting over £1.8 million has been invested in various projects such as improving water quality along the River Taw and restoring habitats like culm grassland. The Man and Biosphere programme tests approaches for sustainable development by connecting people with nature and leveraging funding at a catchment scale. The Minister mentioned newer reserves including Brighton and Lewes Downs, and Isle of Wight, both undertaking local engagement reflecting their distinct ecosystems. She acknowledged the need to protect land as per the Environment Act 2021, adding discussions are ongoing about national park status for islands like Isle of Wight and a potential island park designation. Emphasising international commitment, she noted £3 billion will go towards protecting nature and biodiversity through initiatives such as the blue planet fund to support developing countries in marine conservation.
