Caroline Nokes, MP for Romsey and Southampton North, raised the issue of Southampton’s bid to become the UK City of Culture in 2025. She emphasised that culture encompasses various aspects such as art, music, sport, history, architecture, and innovation, but fundamentally, it is about community and bringing people together. The bid has involved a wide range of partnerships including councils from different political backgrounds, MPs representing both Labour and Conservative parties, and councillors working in tandem to progress through the final stages. Southampton’s bid has been strengthened by incorporating the wider Solent region, enhancing its cultural offerings and resources.

Government Response
Nigel Huddleston thanked Caroline Nokes for securing the debate and acknowledged Southampton’s strong bid. He highlighted that the UK City of Culture is part of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport's broader efforts to level up across the UK by driving economic growth and regeneration through cultural initiatives. Previous winners like Derry/Londonderry (2013), Hull (2017), and Coventry (2021) saw significant investments and transformative effects. Southampton is one of four shortlisted locations for 2025, selected based on advice from an independent expert panel chaired by Sir Phil Redmond. The final recommendation will be made following visits to the finalists in May. Huddleston commended Southampton’s diverse cultural offerings including music scenes, festivals, theatres, galleries, universities, and research institutions. He also recognised the work of the Southampton 2025 Trust, a partnership led by local authorities and educational institutions aiming to enhance the city's perception and attract more visitors and businesses. The minister noted that all longlisted places received £40,000 grants to support their applications, ensuring a fair competition and aiding in the development of deliverable plans. He emphasised that benefits extend beyond winners, with enduring partnerships and scalable plans being developed even for non-winners. Huddleston concluded by wishing Southampton good luck in the final stages and reiterating DCMS’s commitment to supporting all bidders.
