Opened the debate
Mr Andrew Selous, Member of Parliament for South West Bedfordshire, championed the importance of physical activity in preventing chronic diseases and improving mental health. He highlighted that regular exercise reduces the risk of breast cancer by 20%, dementia by 30%, depression by 30%, colon cancer by 30%, cardiovascular disease by 35%, and type 2 diabetes up to 40%. Selous noted that physical inactivity is responsible for one in six UK deaths, similar to smoking's impact. He emphasised the need for active travel and cycling as essential components of daily life, citing a British Medical Journal article showing a 40% lower chance of death among those who commute by bicycle. Selous also discussed initiatives like the 'daily mile' programme in schools and called for more use of our diplomatic network to learn from best practices abroad.
