Government Statement
The current west coast franchise agreement is due to expire on October 16th. The Government will act in accordance with the Railways Act 1993 section 26(1). Further information cannot be provided at this time due to commercial sensitivity. Avanti has experienced a sudden halt of rest-day working by drivers, leading to significant cancellations and timetable reductions. The Department works closely with Avanti to monitor performance and increase services between Manchester and London as an absolute priority.

Shadow Comment

Navendu Mishra
Shadow Comment
The shadow criticises the Government for failing to address the chaos caused by Avanti West Coast's actions. The problem stems from Avanti’s business model expecting drivers to work rest days, leading to staffing shortages and poor performance. ASLEF members are on strike for pay issues unrelated to this situation. Mishra questions the former Secretary of State's decision-making and demands clarity on revenue loss following timetable cuts.
