At midnight on 31 March 1948, the National Fire Service was disbanded, marking the beginning of Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service. The service has been protecting over 800,000 residents across 723 square miles since then. Rob Butler commends the efforts of 359 firefighters and more than 125 support staff in responding to approximately 16,000 calls annually with around 8,000 emergency incidents last year alone. He also highlights the importance of fire prevention services, community outreach programmes, and apprenticeship schemes for young and older individuals alike.
Butler expresses concern over the potential closure of the Buckinghamshire Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) team due to budget constraints at the Home Office but is relieved that it has now secured funding until April 2025. He argues for long-term support from the Treasury in the next spending review, noting the invaluable regional impact of Bucks USAR beyond its immediate area.
He also acknowledges challenges within the service such as bullying and misconduct, while praising steps taken by local authorities to address these issues.

Government Response
Philp congratulates Rob Butler on securing this debate and acknowledges the hard work of firefighters across the country. He announces that all 19 urban search and rescue centres will remain open until at least April 2025, with funding bids being made to extend their operation beyond this period. The Minister also notes a strong financial settlement for fire services, providing an average of about 8% more funding than last year. Philp addresses the issue of cultural standards within the fire service, urging immediate action against inappropriate behaviour and highlighting full vetting checks as exemplary practice in Buckinghamshire.
