Opened the debate
The MP for Tipton and Wednesbury highlighted the importance of the metro extension between Wednesbury and Brierley Hill. The project, according to a 2017 review, offers a return on investment ranging from £1.37 to £2.48 for every £1 invested. It is crucial for unlocking significant economic development opportunities within the Black Country core strategy and has the potential to leverage over £6 billion in investments, creating high-quality housing and commercial spaces. Additionally, it can reduce transit times drastically compared to current bus routes, with proposed tram stops cutting travel time from 66 minutes to 29 minutes. The project also supports local attractions like Dudley Zoo and the Black Country Living Museum. However, there are concerns about delays and increased congestion on roads due to these delays, affecting daily commuters and local businesses. Despite this, the MP fully endorses Mayor Andy Street's vision for investment zones along the metro line but emphasises the need for a robust operational model that ensures financial sustainability for Midland Metro Ltd, which runs the service.

Government Response
The Minister for Roads and Local Transport thanked Shaun Bailey for securing the debate. He pledged to visit Tipton soon and acknowledged the project’s importance, noting that significant funding has already been allocated through the transforming cities fund (£321.5 million) with £207 million dedicated specifically to the metro extension. The Government remains committed to levelling up all areas of England and supporting sustainable economic growth in city regions like the west midlands. He confirmed ongoing discussions with Andy Street regarding funding challenges and potential solutions, including opportunities for strategic capital investment aligned with levelling-up objectives. While praising the role of trams and metros in connecting communities and facilitating job access, he emphasised the need for transparency and financial responsibility. The Minister reaffirmed his commitment to working closely with local representatives to address challenges and deliver the scheme, highlighting its importance for economic development in the Black Country.
