The debate addresses the closure of post offices, which is a problem not isolated to Edinburgh West but prevalent across the UK. Post office closures have affected communities significantly, reducing access to essential services such as banking and government forms. In Scotland alone, over 6% of post offices closed in the past two years. The situation has worsened with only one-third of rural post offices now offering part-time outreach services for an average of five and a half hours. Constituents heavily rely on these post offices, especially older people and those who prefer traditional methods over digital services.

Government Response
I congratulate Christine Jardine on securing this debate. I acknowledge the importance of post offices to communities across the UK, stating that the network is valued for its economic contribution and social benefits. The Post Office network has not been declining; more branches opened than closed in the past year. However, consumer habits have led to a decrease in remuneration from Government services, affecting sustainability. I highlight ongoing efforts to improve postmasters' remuneration through negotiations with UK Finance and legislations such as the Financial Services and Markets Act 2023. The Government has provided over £2.5 billion in support for rural post offices since 2012, with an additional £335 million planned until 2025. Future opportunities include improved remuneration from banking services and increased revenue through parcel delivery services. We aim to ensure a sustainable network by exploring co-location of postal and banking services where feasible.
