Government Statement
Since the last update on November 28, Ukraine has been fortifying its border with Belarus. A significant cyber-attack occurred on Kyivstar's network on December 12. The Russian air force used the AS-24 Killjoy missile in August and again in December. The UK continues to support Ukraine, focusing on areas like air defence and hardening critical infrastructure. On December 11, the Defence Secretary announced a new maritime capability coalition with Norway, providing ships and vehicles for Ukraine's maritime operations. This coalition will deliver long-term support including training and equipment. To date, the UK has committed £4.6 billion in military aid to Ukraine, trained over 52,000 soldiers since 2015, and donated significant amounts of ammunition and matériel.

Shadow Comment

John Healey
Shadow Comment
The shadow defence secretary criticised the minister for not providing an oral statement on Ukraine. He highlighted Ukraine's ongoing challenges including ammunition shortages, and questioned why no new UK weaponry had been provided since July or military funding for next year agreed upon. The UK’s support must continue through 2024 with clear plans for economic and diplomatic aid.
