Government Statement
Since the attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7th, we have increased our military presence in the region. This involves deploying a Royal Navy task group to the eastern Mediterranean with RFA Lyme Bay and RFA Argus, three Merlin helicopters, and a company of Royal Marines as a contingency measure. HMS Diamond is sailing through the Red Sea to provide maritime security, while HMS Lancaster is already in the Middle East. The UK Ministry of Defence will conduct surveillance flights over the eastern Mediterranean using unmanned aircraft tasked solely with locating hostages. These flights do not have a combat role. We are also working on land, air and maritime routes for humanitarian aid provision, having delivered over 74 tonnes via four RAF flights to Egypt so far. Our force in the wider Middle East stands at nearly 2,500 military personnel. Later this week, I will visit sovereign base areas, Cyprus, Palestinian territories, and Israel with the Chief of Defence Staff to reaffirm UK support for Israel, emphasise humanitarian aid needs, understand next steps in Gaza post-pause, and support a two-state solution.

We welcome last week’s pause in fighting but are concerned about its restart. The military operations must not be repeated, protecting civilians is paramount, and Israel must meet international law duties. We support the UK’s role to strengthen regional stability and appreciate initial deployments. However, with personnel rising to at least 4,500 since October, escalation risks increase. Questions include: ensuring surveillance flights only for hostage rescue, knowing exact hostage numbers, protecting commercial shipping routes, boosting protection for UK personnel, opening maritime routes for aid, and RAF aid flight numbers this month.
