It is a privilege to speak in this debate, which was opened so well by the hon. Member for Cities of London and Westminster. I thank her and her colleagues for securing the debate. I am proud to represent the constituency with the largest Jewish population in Yorkshire, contributing significantly to our city’s culture, economy and society. The Jewish community has a fantastic history, especially regarding their frontline role against fascism and continued political engagement. In Leeds, there are Reform and Orthodox synagogues, kosher bakeries, butchers, and various support services provided by organisations like the Leeds Jewish Welfare Board. Given the current cost of living crisis, these efforts are crucial today. I also reflect on Sheila Saunders’s legacy in founding Leeds Jewish Women’s Aid for those affected by domestic abuse and sexual violence. My father’s journey from a persecuted Jew to a naturalised British citizen exemplifies this history. Lastly, I pay tribute to holocaust survivors like Trude Silman, Arek Hersh, and Iby Knill who contribute to our collective knowledge.

It is an honour to follow the hon. Member for Leeds North East, Fabian Hamilton. He reminds me of the book about Friedrich Engels by Tristram Hunt and Hadley Freeman's book on family survival in London. What differentiates Jewish history from others is the continuous questioning 'Why do they keep picking on us?'. There are 16 million Jews worldwide, with around a quarter-million here, contributing magnificently. My hon. Friend Nickie Aiken introduced this debate, and I commend Esther Rantzen for her work. Notably, it's not just significant people but everyday individuals who make contributions in various fields. I support the national holocaust memorial commission and learning centre proposals as they educate about our shared history. Our future is together if we learn from each other’s traditions. At Sir Simon Milton’s funeral, a member of the Community Security Trust thanked me for my presence, reflecting the importance of mutual defence.

Christine Jardine

Acknowledges the rich cultural contributions of the Jewish community beyond antisemitism, including literary figures like Muriel Spark and political figures such as Malcolm Rifkind. Discusses historical milestones in Scotland's Jewish communities and emphasises the need to celebrate this history while combating antisemitism.

I emphasised the importance of Jewish history, highlighting hope in the face of antisemitism. I referenced historical examples and modern heroes who have stood against hate and for peace, such as Youssef Ziadna and Rami from Israel. I also mentioned positive developments like the Abraham accords and praised political leaders for standing up against dissent.
Jim Shannon

I acknowledged the rich Jewish heritage in Northern Ireland, mentioning guided tours of Belfast with Jewish connections, the interactive online Jewish heritage map of Northern Ireland, and the historical significance of McGill’s farm. I advocated for a Jewish history month to increase awareness and challenge antisemitic stereotypes, emphasising the intrinsic link between the Jewish community and British culture.
Warrington North
Stressed the importance of recognising a broader spectrum of Jewish contributions beyond antisemitism and Israel, including cultural aspects like wrestling. Cited historical figures such as Al Lipman and contemporary stars like Noam Dar to illustrate diverse achievements within British Jewry. Emphasised the potential for a Jewish history month to educate on varied Jewish contributions.

I celebrate the Jewish population in my constituency, which has grown by 7% between 2011 and 2021. However, there is a sense of fear and insecurity among Jews due to antisemitism, including hate speech on social media. I support the call for a Jewish history month to highlight their contributions to British society.

I thank Nickie Aiken for securing this debate and acknowledge the significant contribution of the Jewish community in Aberconwy. Despite historical challenges, including Edward I's expulsion of Jews in 1290, the Jewish population has thrived economically and culturally since the Victorian era. Recent examples include the first Jewish mayor in Aberconwy elected in 1978 and the care of Conwy battlements handed to a Jewish constable in 2012. I support celebrating this history as it enriches our national identity.

I congratulate the hon. Member for Cities of London and Westminster on securing the debate and on the strength of her opening speech. I love where I live, which is home to people of all faiths, including a vibrant Muslim community, various Christian congregations, significant Sikh and Hindu communities, Baha’i followers, and most Jews living in Scotland. We should celebrate the diversity that makes us who we are. The Jewish community in East Renfrewshire has been present since the 1700s and made significant contributions to medicine, law, education, and business. I mentioned the work of Rabbi Pete Tobias, Ernest Levy, Rabbi Moshe Rubin, Henry Wuga, Brigadier Monty Cowen, Evie Yedd, Cosgrove Care, Jewish Care, the Scottish Council of Jewish Communities, the Glasgow Jewish Representative Council, and other groups for their cross-community and cross-faith dialogue. These organisations have been vital in supporting the community and encouraging discussion.

I thank the hon. Member for Cities of London and Westminster for securing this debate, which has been hugely interesting. I recognise the rich contribution of the Jewish community across British civil society despite historical discrimination such as the persecution in 1190 and expulsion under Edward I. In Gateshead, there is a large Charedi community with one of the largest yeshivas outside Israel. Jewish communities have contributed to trade unions, communal organisations, and charitable work. Jami provides mental health support for the Jewish community and works in partnership with other communities. Jewish Women’s Aid offers specialist support to Jewish women affected by domestic abuse. The Community Security Trust has recorded over 2000 antisemitic incidents since October. We must combat hate crime through education about the holocaust and support a permanent memorial and learning centre. Labour supports British Jewish history month and works with Jewish community organisations on community cohesion.
