Opened the debate
Mr Speaker granted this debate to address the issue raised by several constituents from the Isles of Scilly regarding the cost of post-16 education. The unique challenges faced by students on these islands include a lack of local sixth-form provision, necessitating travel and accommodation on the mainland. Parents face high costs for either host family arrangements or boarding schools. Despite this, students from Scilly outperform their peers in GCSEs but struggle with completion rates due to the challenging living conditions. The current grant funding of £6,365 per student is insufficient to cover actual expenses, which can exceed £15,000 annually when including travel and accommodation costs.

Government Response
The Minister acknowledges the unique challenges faced by students on the Isles of Scilly due to the lack of local post-16 education provision. He notes that young people from Scilly face daunting travel and accommodation costs, impacting their emotional well-being and educational success. The Government has increased funding for 16-to-19 education by £1.6 billion in 2024-25 compared to the previous financial year. Students on the Isles of Scilly receive an additional per-student grant of £6,365, a 11% increase from last year. Despite this, families argue that it is insufficient due to rising costs and limited host family options. The Minister agrees to consider further funding requests as part of the spending review and offers to meet with Derek Thomas and council officials for detailed discussions. He also expresses concern over student wellbeing and mentions safety measures such as Disclosure and Barring Service checks for host families. Additionally, he discusses the logistical challenges of providing face-to-face education on Scilly and highlights collaboration between mainland colleges to offer a wide variety of high-quality options to learners from the isles.
