Opened the debate
The MP for Stretford and Urmston raised concerns about the closure of post offices in his constituency, particularly focusing on Partington and Woodsend Road. He highlighted that these closures have significant impacts on isolated communities lacking transportation options and essential services such as banking facilities. The nearest post office is 3.9 miles away, making it difficult for local residents to access services. Residents shared stories about the loss of community hubs and increased costs and safety risks due to long-distance travel. The MP also discussed the decline in footfall at post offices due to online shopping trends, reduced government service provision through post offices, and the need for more financial support from banks that have closed high street branches.
Government Response
The Minister acknowledged the importance of post offices to isolated communities and highlighted that despite challenges, the Post Office network is still significant with over 11,500 branches across the country. He noted that more than £2.5 billion in funding has been provided by the Government since 2012 and will continue with a further £588 million up to 2025. The Minister emphasised that 99% of the population must live within three miles of their nearest branch, indicating that Partington is covered under these criteria. He stated that there are opportunities for post offices to diversify services such as providing more banking facilities and expanding parcel delivery options online. The Minister also mentioned ongoing discussions with banks regarding further support through the next iteration of the banking framework agreement, aiming to ensure sustainable funding for post offices.
