Opened the debate
The MP thanked the Minister for engaging with concerns about the zero pollack quota decision, which has affected many fishermen in Cornwall. He highlighted that over 40 boats operating out of Mevagissey, Newquay and Fowey rely on pollack catch significantly, with losses estimated at £200,000 for the Hunkin family alone. The decision has also impacted fisheries across Cornwall, affecting supply-chain businesses as well. Despite the difficult position Ministers were in due to ICES recommendations, fishermen lost their ability to make a living overnight. The loss of 570 tonnes of pollack quota represents £2.3 million to the Cornish economy and impacts fishing ports like Mevagissey severely. Fishermen need more time to adapt and face challenges with data accuracy and lack of support for measures that could prevent drastic action. The MP urged the Minister to prioritise work with fisheries committees, listen to concerns, and help fishermen sustainably return pollack quota.
Government Response
The Minister thanked Steve Double for his efforts in supporting constituents. He acknowledged the scientific advice from ICES which led to a zero pollack quota but emphasised that DEFRA secured an EU-UK bycatch TAC of 832 tonnes to avoid choking healthy fisheries. The Government announced reopening of the Fisheries and Seafood Scheme, providing up to £6 million for business diversification with expedited applications for small vessels. A new scientific study led by CEFAS will engage fishermen in collecting data on pollack stocks. The Minister committed to working with the EU to improve stock assessment and management, including exploring recreational fishing pressure reduction. He reiterated support for long-term sustainable management of pollack fishery and offered continued discussions.
