Government Statement
Today, Mims Davies announced the publication of the Government's disability action plan aimed at transforming disabled people’s lives across all aspects. The plan follows a consultation period that ran for 12 weeks and received over 1,300 responses, with broad support for proposed actions. It includes 32 practical actions covering areas such as political engagement, emergency planning, climate-related policies, family information, playground accessibility, business understanding of disabled people's needs, hosting the Special Olympics in 2031, guide dog support, policy effectiveness measurement, future research, accessible publications, cost of living for disabled individuals, UN convention understanding, and monitoring progress. The plan aligns with the national disability strategy published in 2021, aiming to improve lives both now and in the future through various initiatives including employment reforms, welfare changes, health care improvements, and cost-of-living support.

Shadow Comment

Vicky Foxcroft
Shadow Comment
Shadow Minister Vicky Foxcroft criticised the Government's delayed response to delivering a national disability strategy despite manifesto promises. While acknowledging some positives in the disability action plan such as tackling guide dog refusals and support for political engagement, she highlighted that it fails to address the top concern for disabled people: the cost of living crisis. Citing surveys by Sense and the Royal National Institute of Blind People, she pointed out that 85% of people with complex disabilities are worried about rising costs. The shadow minister also criticised inadequate disability cost-of-living support measures and the flawed assessment processes in the social security system.
