Opened the debate
The MP thanked the Speaker for granting him this debate. He highlighted that the healthcare services in his rural constituency are inadequate due to a 17-year period of centralisation which stripped back local health services. Key issues include delays in vaccinations, recruitment and retention challenges for GPs and other healthcare workers, lack of travel reimbursement, and reduced funding leading to higher costs for locum staff (£21 million spent on locum staffing). The MP also emphasised the need for restoration of maternity services and women’s health provision. He highlighted long waiting lists for child and adolescent mental health assessments (three years) and neurodevelopmental screenings (four years), advocating for urgent intervention.

Government Response
The Minister acknowledged the importance of addressing health challenges in rural constituencies and pledged to work towards improving access to primary care, dentistry, and dental health services. She highlighted the need for a 10-year plan to restore the NHS and emphasised the role of integrated care systems and technology such as virtual wards. The Minister also mentioned Labour's commitment to train thousands more GPs and discussed the challenges faced in rural areas due to travel times and recruitment issues. She noted that funding formulas account for the additional costs of providing services in rural areas and pledged to work closely with hon. Members across jurisdictions to improve health outcomes.
