Opened the debate
As I know right hon. and hon. Members across the House will agree, Jeffrey Epstein was a despicable criminal who committed disgusting crimes and destroyed the lives of countless women and girls. His victims must be our first priority. The Prime Minister has asked the Cabinet Secretary to review all available information regarding Peter Mandelson’s contact with Jeffrey Epstein during his period as a Government Minister. No Government Minister should have behaved in this way, and Peter Mandelson's actions are an insult to the victims.

Government Response

Government Response
The Government are not defending Peter Mandelson but ensuring integrity in Parliament. The process for political appointments has been strengthened. For declarations of interest, there must be consequences, including removal from the House of Lords and loss of peerage if the other place brings forward proposals. All due process was followed in the appointment. New measures for political appointments are being implemented. The Government is committed to updating House of Lords procedures and cooperating with any investigations, standing ready to introduce necessary legislation swiftly. The Cabinet Secretary is reviewing Government archives concerning Mandelson's time as a Labour Minister. New information has come to light, and we will cooperate with any investigation that takes place. The ministerial code was strengthened by the current administration to ensure robust rules in holding Ministers accountable. The Prime Minister’s judgment was made clear when, as soon as misleading information about Peter Mandelson became available, he was sacked. The Government stand ready to act swiftly on reforms needed in the House of Lords and comply with investigations.

Shadow Response

Alex Burghart (Con) - Shadow Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster
Shadow Response
The crimes of Jeffrey Epstein were truly terrible. The latest set of releases from the US Department of Justice show a relationship built on affection, money transfers from Epstein to Mandelson’s family, and information transfer from Mandelson to Epstein. We welcome the belated announcement of an investigation into Mandelson’s conduct but this should have happened long ago. There needs to be an investigation into his behaviour while he was our ambassador in Washington. The Government must now be honest about what they knew when making the appointment.
