The issue of ghost plates was first brought to my attention by local residents, police and crime commissioner Simon Foster, and roads policing experts. Ghost or stealth plates are reflective coatings on number plates that make vehicles invisible to infrared police speed cameras. The current penalty for using a ghost plate is just £100 fine—no points and no driving ban, which is insufficient as it does not deter drivers from speeding or committing other dangerous acts such as running red lights. I propose reviewing the penalties for ghost plates to include fines of up to £1,000, six penalty points, vehicle seizure, and licence disqualification.
