The Government has published its response to the consultation on proposals to improve the School Food Standards in England, aiming to enhance the nutritional quality of school food. The response is based on 5,216 consultation responses and reflects feedback on affordability, implementation, meal uptake, and inclusion. The revised standards will increase emphasis on fruit, vegetables, fibre, and healthy protein sources, while reducing sugar and restricting foods high in saturated fat, sugar, and salt. Dedicated breakfast standards will be introduced to support healthier eating habits. The government will lay regulations in October 2026, with the majority of the revised standards coming into force from September 2027, and some secondary school requirements from September 2028. A new national compliance framework will be introduced in September 2027, including a lead governor for school food and the publication of menus and policies online. The government is also rolling out free breakfast clubs and extending free school meals to more children from disadvantaged backgrounds to improve attainment, behaviour, and outcomes.
