Bramhall High School: Condition of Buildings

Mr Morrison thanked the Under-Secretary of State for Education, Josh MacAlister, for attending the debate. The school was disappointed when it learned that a full rebuild would not be funded despite being within budget and meeting the needs outlined by the school-specific brief. Morrison detailed issues such as blocks with RAAC, ageing infrastructure, and lack of essential facilities. He emphasised that the partial rebuild will cost more in the long term and leave only one block standing without basic amenities. The speech also touched on insufficient funding for fixtures and equipment, leading to a financial shortfall. Morrison argued for better planning, investment, and alignment with recent policy changes.

Government Response

Mr MacAlister congratulated Mr Morrison on his advocacy for Bramhall High School. He highlighted the government's commitment to tackling crumbling school estates through proactive management, long-term maintenance, and renewal of the existing estate. The minister emphasised significant investment in education infrastructure, including a £20 billion school rebuilding programme. He reassured that Bramhall High School would benefit from this initiative with 90% of its facilities being rebuilt, ensuring modern classrooms for decades ahead. Mr MacAlister stated that fixed furniture and fixtures are provided within the rebuild project but not standard loose items like tables and chairs. The minister acknowledged the school's achievements in overcoming challenges and praised the strong partnership between stakeholders. He affirmed the government’s commitment to delivering a safe, modern and high-quality school in Bramhall.
