Grenfell Tower Fire: Ninth Anniversary

On the ninth anniversary of the Grenfell tower fire, MP Joe Powell paid tribute to the victims and advocated for criminal accountability for those responsible. Powell commended the Metropolitan police's progress in handing over files to the Crown Prosecution Service but urged for swift court capacity planning for complex trials. He also pushed for an audit of public contracts with implicated companies, excluding them from future public work if cited in professional misconduct. Powell acknowledged positive changes such as the introduction of a single construction regulator and residential personal emergency evacuation plans, but stressed the need for a national oversight mechanism to track recommendations from all inquiries and investigations. He expressed disappointment over RBKC's decision to remove an opposition chair of the housing scrutiny committee and urged more community involvement in the Lancaster West estate refurbishment.

Minister Samantha Dixon thanked Joe Powell for raising this important issue, acknowledging the ninth anniversary of the Grenfell Tower tragedy. She emphasised the Government's commitment to justice and accountability, supporting ongoing investigations by the Metropolitan police. The Government will continue to support bereaved families and survivors through memorials and community projects. Minister Dixon outlined progress on implementing the inquiry’s recommendations, completing 21 out of 61 recommendations since February 2025, with all expected to be delivered by 2029. She highlighted transparency measures like a public record tracker for inquiries' recommendations and steps to exclude implicated companies from future public contracts. The Government has provided £8 million for NHS support during the tower’s deconstruction and further funding for schools serving the Grenfell community. Minister Dixon pledged ongoing oversight of RBKC's performance and promised swift progress on safety reforms.
