With your permission, Madam Deputy Speaker, I wish to make a statement on the Government’s return to the Humble Address on Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. Today, documents requested by the House in its 24 February 2026 Humble Address were laid before it, covering the creation of the role of special representative for trade and investment in 2001, the appointment of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, and the advice of officials and Ministers. These documents include the formal appointment proposal, evidence that Ministers were content with the proposal, internal communications, and media and press briefings. Despite challenges from changing Departments and the need to avoid compromising the police investigation, 11 documents have been published today. The Government are fully cooperating with Thames Valley police in their investigation into potential misconduct in public office.

I support full transparency in this matter. Will there be further disclosure, or is this the final amount? If more documents are released, will a clear timetable be provided? Is the absence of due diligence evidence that no questions were raised at the time about the appointment? When will files related to Lord Mandelson’s role and any advice, correspondence or due diligence connected to his appointment be released?

This may be our last tranche as we have not found more documents. The published statements indicate Ministers' contentment with the proposal at the time, considering the royal palace's keenness for Andrew's appointment. I cannot address Lord Mandelson’s papers now but will do so separately. On trade envoys, all appointees are bound by the code of conduct of either House and undergo a clear process when appointed.

Chris Bryant acknowledged that no questions were raised at any stage despite concerns and stated there are no intentions to appoint anyone else to such a role. He confirmed that vetting is standard for non-royal appointments but not for royal family members, and he reassured Chamberlain that they have moved as fast as possible.
